Unfortunately, conflicts between people and wild animals occur regularly in Benin. Hippos are often involved in these conflicts. The animals damaged fishing gear and destroyed corn and cassava. As a result, the farmers who grow these crops suffer great damage and lose income. Some people therefore sometimes decide to kill the animals as an act of revenge. Fortunately, the NGO JEVEV is committed to protecting the hippos. They will educate people from the local community about the importance of protecting hippos. They will also teach about nature in schools. In this way, they want to prevent people from taking more of the hippos’ habitat and they want to ensure that the hippos are better protected.
