Niger is home to a special giraffe subspecies, the Peralta giraffe. This area is home to the last populations of Peralta giraffes in all of West Africa. Unfortunately, this particular subspecies is threatened with extinction due to human-animal conflicts.
Thanks to the efforts of Associacion pour la Sauvegarde des giraffes du Niger (ASGN) in Niger, the population is growing again. The ASGN makes the local population aware that they can profit socially and economically from the presence of the giraffes (through tourism, among other things). In addition, ASGN protects the habitat of the giraffes, so that humans and animals can live in the same environment.
