Bulgaria Vultures Conservation Foundation 2012

Bald vultures are native to the Balkans. The population became extinct in 1970 due to poisoning of sheep by farmers. These farmers feared the threat of wolves to their livestock. They hoped that the wolves would eat the poisoned sheep and thus disappear. Unfortunately, the vultures ate the dead sheep and became extinct in the Balkans.

To rebuild the population, the Wildlife Fund is supporting this reintroduction, by sending two griffon vultures to the Balkans. These vultures were born in DierenPark Amersfoort.
