From the IUCN there are several specialist groups, as is the case for the Asian elephant. The specialist group shares information from the field and gives IUCN advice on the status of the elephant. In addition, they also deal with protection measures and the future of the Asian elephant.
The specialist group wanted to come together for the first time to discuss the situation and make future plans for elephant conservation. Participants of the group were invited from 16 different countries as well as key board members. This initiative is fully funded by the specialist group which depends on donations. Unfortunately, not every participant is able to pay the expenses. Therefore, the Wildlife Fund has also contributed to ensure that every member from the specialist group can attend.
